Artist Statement

I have always been drawn to the human form and the multitude of emotions it can express. Whether working in 2D or 3D, creating feelings, creating an attitude, attracts and challenges me. This is my inspiration. I like to create personality in faces and body language. My goal is for the viewer to feel it, to “get it.” I strive to create reactions to my work, to bring forth a spirit. I want my pieces to be remembered for this.

Compositional movement is an element I focus on in my all of my work. I arrange the composition in a 2D frame purposefully to keep the viewer’s eye moving around within. My paintings and drawings depict life in the hills and fantasies; a simple, back-to-the-land, pig earth life. The glimpse of a story is seen in my compositions.

With sculptures, I intentionally sculpt forms to move the viewer’s eye around my work. There is no back to my sculptures. My pieces are of the human figure. I create emotions. Strength of character, sometimes calm, other times sad, or sensual. I hope that whatever the emotion I chose will be felt by others. My sculptures aren’t story scenes like my paintings. The sculptures are a glimpse of people who are complicated and have depth.

Creativity is a blessing, a calling. It is who I am. Bringing forth an image is like breathing—it cannot stopped. It makes me whole. Imagination is my soul.
